Decking Calculator

Estimate decking boards, joists, posts and fasteners for a rectangular deck from its dimensions and board size.

What this calculator measures

A deck estimate has four linked quantities: the decking surface, the joist framing beneath it, the posts that carry the frame and the fasteners that hold it together. This calculator works from the deck's length and width plus the board and joist spacing to produce a coordinated material list. Changing the board width changes the board count; changing the joist spacing changes the joist count; both feed the fastener estimate.

The tool keeps the surface area, the framing count and the fastener count as separate lines so that a change in decking pattern or joist layout can be traced to its effect on each material.

How the calculation works

Deck area = length × width. Boards = ceil(area / board coverage) with waste. Joists = ceil(width / joist spacing) + 1 (or length, depending on orientation) × rows. Fasteners = boards × fasteners per board.

The calculator computes the deck area, then divides by the coverage of one board (board length × board width, in consistent units) to get a board count, adding a waste percentage for cuts and defects. Joist count is derived from the deck dimension perpendicular to the joists divided by the joist spacing, plus one for the starting joist, multiplied by the number of joist rows. Post count is estimated from the beam and joist span limits you enter. Fasteners are estimated as boards times fasteners per board.

Because board orientation and joist direction are a design choice, the calculator asks which dimension the joists run; the count follows that choice. Always confirm the layout against the actual framing plan.

Worked example

Using a 12 ft × 16 ft deck, 5.5 in wide boards 12 ft long, 16 in on-center joists and 10 % waste, the calculator returns:

Deck area192 ft²
Decking boards30
Joists (16 in o.c.)10
Posts (est.)6
Fasteners (est.)~600

Thirty boards cover 192 ft² with a 10 % waste allowance. Ten joists at 16 in on center span the 12 ft width. Six posts is a typical count for a deck of this size on a simple beam layout, but the actual post count depends on beam span and local code. Fasteners are estimated at roughly 20 per board.

Reading the result: the board count is the number to order (round up to full bundles), the joist count is the framing material, and the fastener count is a planning figure to be checked against the fastener manufacturer's spacing recommendation.

Inputs, field by field

  • Deck length and width (ft): Measure the outside of the deck frame, including any overhang if the decking extends past the rim joist.
  • Board width (in): Nominal width of the decking board. Common values are 5.5 in for 6 in nominal decking and 3.5 in for 4 in nominal.
  • Board length (ft): The stock length you will order. Longer boards mean fewer joints but more waste on a small deck.
  • Joist spacing (in): On-center spacing of the joists. 16 in is standard for residential decking; 12 in for diagonal or heavy loads.
  • Waste (%): 10 % is typical for a rectangular deck; use 15 % for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
  • Fasteners per board: Depends on fastener type and spacing. Two per joist crossing is a common rule of thumb.

Why the inputs matter

Board width and length drive the board count; joist spacing drives the framing count; both are independent choices that together determine the fastener count. A narrower board increases board count and fastener count but can improve appearance.

Units and conversion checks

Lengths are in feet and inches as labeled. The calculator converts inches to feet internally where needed. Keep units consistent with the labels to avoid a 12× error.

Common mistakes with this calculation

  • Ordering decking by area without accounting for board width and the gaps between boards.
  • Forgetting that diagonal decking increases both board count and waste substantially.
  • Using the deck area for joist count instead of the perpendicular dimension and spacing.
  • Underestimating fasteners: two per joist crossing per board adds up quickly.
  • Ignoring the post and beam layout, which is governed by span tables, not by this calculator.

Ordering and materials

Order decking in full bundles or by the board, joists and beams by the piece, and fasteners by the box. Add a waste allowance to the board count before ordering, and order one extra joist and one extra post for cuts and defects. Confirm all lumber grades and spans against the applicable code and span tables.

What this calculator does not decide

This tool does not determine structural adequacy, required post and beam sizes, footing size, lateral bracing, railing or guard requirements, or code compliance. Those depend on loads, soil, climate and the applicable building code. Where safety or regulated construction is involved, the project documents and qualified professionals take precedence.

Planning estimate only: Verify measurements, product data, project specifications and applicable requirements before purchasing or constructing.

Field verification checklist

Before ordering, confirm the deck dimensions against the plan, verify board width and length availability, check joist spacing against the decking manufacturer's recommendation, confirm post and beam layout against span tables, and recompute the fastener count from the final joist layout.

Practical workflow

Measure the deck, choose board size and joist spacing, calculate, verify the board count against full bundles, confirm the framing layout against span tables, then order materials with a waste allowance.
