How Many Pavers for a 12x12 Patio?
A 12 ft by 12 ft patio is a common weekend project. Here is the paver count, how pattern choice changes it, and what else the job needs.
A 12 ft by 12 ft patio is 144 ft², and it is one of the most common DIY hardscape projects. The paver count depends on the paver size and the pattern, and the base material is usually the larger cost and effort.
The basic count
A common 6 in by 9 in paver covers 0.375 ft². Dividing 144 ft² by 0.375 gives 384 pavers at minimum. A 4 in by 8 in paver covers 0.222 ft² and needs 648 pavers. The paver size has a large effect on the count and on the look of the finished patio.
Pattern waste
A running bond or stack bond wastes about 5 % to 8 %. A herringbone or 45-degree pattern can waste 10 % to 15 % because of the diagonal cuts at the edges. Add the waste to the base count and round up to whole pavers.
Base material
The paver count is only part of the job. A typical patio needs 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel base and 1 inch of bedding sand. For 144 ft², that is roughly 2 to 3 cubic yards of gravel and about 0.4 cubic yards of sand. Use the gravel and sand calculators to size these.
Edge restraint and sand
Edge restraints hold the pavers in place and are ordered by the linear foot of perimeter. Joint sand fills the gaps and is ordered by the bag. Both are easy to forget in the initial estimate.
Ordering advice
Order pavers by the piece or by the pallet, adding the waste allowance and one extra box for future repairs. Buy all pavers from the same production run for color consistency. And remember that a quantity estimate is not a structural design: base preparation and drainage are separate decisions.
